Well Folks, it’s cold! Here in Morganton, NC we’re
experiencing the coldest weather of the Winter Season, so far. I tracked temperatures yesterday as they dropped to
0* (*degrees) last night at 11:30 P.M., and awoke this morning to an
outside temperature of -2* below zero.
None-the-less my birds have been frantically eating all day in order to produce
the energy required to survive this brutal cold snap. I’ve had the bird feeder
video camera running today and will post some video of events at the feeder
throughout the Mike Emory Affiliate Marketing network later on - so stay tuned in and enjoy wild bird feeding and watching pleasure.
Read on below for a few
tips on taking care of your birds through the Winter Season.
For the birds who do tough out the harsh winters without
migrating to sunnier locations, they can use a little help from us along the
way. Consider these tips when filling your bird feeders for the remainder of the
winter:
- Location,
location, location: Place your bird feeders out of the wind. Position your
feeder near cover, but out in the open so your birds can watch for danger.
- Offer
the good stuff: In the winter, high calorie, high fat foods are better for the
birds. Oil sunflower seeds, peanuts and suet are good options. These food types
will also appeal to a wide variety of bird species.
- Drinks
on us: A heated birdbath is a great addition to a wintery backyard. While not
used for actual bathing during the winter, this will provide a much needed
water source for your birds to drink from.
- Provide
cover: In the forms of rousting boxes, bird houses or even trees and shrubbery
If you have any other tips for making winter a more
comfortable season for our wild bird friends, please share them with us!
